ESF Day 1 Part 2 of Some Number (1st Seminar)

The first seminar I went to was is Europe an Alternative to the US Empire. There was of course quite a range of opinion once the discussion started after a late start as they waited for some more people to get there. They mainly agreed the Europe can not compete and should not try to compete millitarily with the US. The most interesting part was the speakers themselves as they came from all over the place (Greece, Ireland, and France and many other places). The one problem they saw was how much the US controls the EU even though many people don't realize it. For example NATO is in charge of protecting the EU, and NATO is certainly very strongly US led. Another favourite topic of almost every seminar was neoliberalism. The privitization of Europe is causing big changes and many of them are not for the good. The seminar also talked about how almost each country has their own imperialist agenda although the US certainly has a much stronger one under Bush currently. The topic of the elections probably came up a bit here though I don't have much notes on that. People should have more progressive ideas.

First Day of ESF

I don't know how long it will take me to finally write everything it may very well be a while, but I will begin to write about the past from my rather extensive notes. I don't really recall what I may have already said to people so I will just try to tell it all. Friday was the first official day of the forum. There were two sites Bloomsbury a collection of buildings near King's Cross Tube Station a 20-30 minute walk from here (it might even be closer) and Alexandra Palace. Knowing that I was really tired from staying up rather late Thursday night trying to figure out what events and places I wanted to go to, I decided to just go to Alexandra Palace because I wasn't sure of what Bloomsbury would be like. It offered primarily workshops. So I took the tube to zone 3 got off at Wood Green and then saw the masses of people and many of us decided to take the uphill 20-30 minute walk because it would be faster than waiting for a bus since we wouldn't even make it onto the first one. It was almost pilgrimage/trek like as we many of us all walked going to one place with a single goal in mind. It was much bigger than the pictures made it look like and it was set way up on a hill. It has some very interesting history and beautiful interiors. More to come tomorrow on what I actually did there.
